Strawberry Fields Forever
I has been too long since we last went out together and did something to make a day full of memories, so we chose a day when Mr MFT wasn’t at work, and we all decided on strawberry picking at a local farm, not far from us. What a great choice, the day was sunny and bright and the girls were so excited to be picking their own fruits, and the thrill of being able to pick and eat , with no problem.
Once we parked, we noticed a pen of pigs, so the girls were delighted to feed and talk to them, in fact it was quite hard to tear them away once we had discovered the pigs.
Back to the strawberry, and raspberry picking, after a very energetic go at feeding the pigs with a bit of grass. There was no shortage of fruits to choose from, Siobhan was so excited, she wasn’t sure where to go first, but soon she was off, on a mission to fill her punnet first.
Lara was more methodical and was looking for the best ones, very choosy, and taste tested the beginning of each row first. It was a mixture of the glorious weather, the outdoors and being all together that made this the perfect day out. We spent a good few hours mulling over which ones, how many, and tasting a few more strawberries, before we called it a day and headed off home.
Nothing tastes sweeter than a strawberry picked by you, fresh from the plant. This was a delicious treat that the girls discovered all over again on this trip, and it was so lovely to watch and photograph the happiness and pleasure they got from the day.
We were talking about what we would make with our little punnet’s of berries, and had a million ideas, fruit kebabs, pavlova, eton mess, but we decided on jam, with some left spare for just picking at. Take a look at how we made our strawberry fridge jam Here
I think we all had our fill of strawberries, and if you are ever in doubt of if it would be a good day out for your kids, just do it, go for it. It is really satisfying to watch them have the freedom to forage away at their hearts content, eating as much as they like (or so I told them!), and being outdoors in the sunshine. Finally we topped it off with an ice cream and a sit down to watch the pigs again, and as we drove off both our girls wanted to come back the next day, a huge endorsement for a fun day in the sun.
Have you taken your family out on a trip like this to pick fruit? I would love to hear about it, and what you made from your fruits, we made some jam, which was delicious.
