Protecting Your Skin With SunSense – My Family Ties

Having lived in both Australia and New Zealand I have a much better understanding than I used to about how important it is to use sun protection.  In Australasia the dangers of sun damage are taught at a very early age, with strict policies in kindergartens and schools to send the children outside only after they have put on their suncream and a hat for protection.  It didn’t take me long with my fair skin to learn not to leave the house without applying lots of sun protection to my children and myself, and always taking a hat.

I started using SunSense in Australia and I remember even when Lara was a baby that I took a tube everywhere in my handbag with me to re-apply every day. We even bought the really handy roll on sunscreen that was so handy to apply on a wriggly toddler! Even though we no longer live in the sun, I have kept on the vigilance of using sun protection and always look for added sun protection in my make-up, and even my hair care products, and of course always use sunscreen for the whole family when we are out in the sun.

As I have got older I always make sure I slather the sun cream on not forgetting the backs of my hands. It’s funny because in Australia I felt my hands were always on show to the sun, as I was pushing Lara’s pushchair everywhere (so the sun shone down right on them!),  I made a real effort to ensure they always had plenty of sun cream on as this is one of the first areas to see signs of ageing, I was so fastidious about protecting the thinner more delicate skin on them and I am glad of that now I am older!

When SunSense got in contact and asked me to review some of their most popular face, neck and chest sun protection products, I was more than happy to share my thoughts as this is the brand I turned to while living in Australasia and I have grown to really rely on it’s quality and of course it’s performance.

Sunsense Sun Protection Products

SunSense Daily Face

SunSense Daily Face is an invisible tint which is oil free and has brad spectrum SPF 50+ giving excellent protection from harmful UVA and UVB exposure. What I like about this lotion is that as it is oil free it gives a light matt finish so no shiny residue on the face. It also has a sheer tint to even out your complexion which is ideal if like me you need a little extra cover, and don’t like to go base free.

Even though this tinted sun cream has a sheer colour to even out any imperfections it won’t block your pores as it is non-comedogenic, not only do I love this on my skin but also my teenage daughter Siobhan’s skin is perfect as it is a little on the oily side, and the Daily Face gives it a lovely matte finish.

SunSense Anti Ageing Face Matte

SunSense Anti Ageing Face is similar to the Daily Face, it has high protection with 50+ SPF, is oil free so non-greasy once applied, non-comedogenic so great for oilier complexions, as well as having very high UVA and UVB protection. It also has a sheer tint in the cream to even out your complexion, the difference with this protective cream is that it is fragrance free, and contains AHA’s, vitamin E and vitamin B3.

AHA’s help to reduce the look of wrinkles, by their ability to gently exfoliate the skin, essentially the job of the AHA’s are to remove the ‘glue’ within the upper epidermis (the upper layer of skin) and to help shed the dead skin cells to give a smoother more youthful appearance. They also help with new skin growth as they stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin, which decrease as we age.

The light oil free nature of the Anti Ageing Face makes it a quick and easy routine to get into when you are going to be exposing your skin to the sun. It sinks in really quickly, and is totally matte and non-greasy, combined with these benefits and the high protection it is the ideal skin routine to make a part of your day.

SunSense Anti Ageing Face

The SunSense Anti Ageing Face is just the same as the Anti Ageing Face Matte but without the sheer tint.  So if you are looking for a broad very high spectrum sunscreen with the added benefit of AHA’s to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, but don’t like the tint then this is the one for you.

I like the fact that SunSense gives plenty of choice in their range, so you can choose the best sunscreen for the whole family and particular skin concerns. From toddler milk to these anti ageing sunscreens SunSense protect very well from UVA and UVB harm and all the products are dermatologically tested.

Having previously used used SunSense (but not the anti ageing ones) I was really happy to try these out that were new to me. Whenever I am out in the sun I always use sunscreen and I really did like the non-greasy finish and easy to apply lotion of all three of these products. The high spectrum of SPF 50+ as well as the benefits of the finished look of the cream once applied, are ideal when you are out in the sun but still want to have a matte look rather than the greasy one some can leave.

If you are going on holiday this year or having a stay-cation, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen – your skin with thank you for it.  As I have reached 40 it has finally hit home just how important it is to take care in the sun and protect my skin.

I've always been very keen to be properly protected in the sun because I'm so fair skinned, but a 50SPF with anti-ageing is brilliant, it can just replace my normal moisturiser in the summer!

My parents never really used sunscreen on me & my brother when we were little & I remember getting badly burnt on holiday a few times. I have always used it on my own children even though they have much darker skin as their Dad is part Jamaican. I have never tried Sunsense but will lookout for it to give it a go.

Quite often, sun screen gets neglected, especially as one gets older!

My youngest son has red hair, while my youngest daughter has almost white hair and both of them are so pale, like me, five minutes in the sun and they are red as a beetroot, my older two though are both quite dark skinned like their father, yet sun-cream is so important. I haven't used this brand though, sounds great, thanks for the review! xxx
