Ollie – The App Controlled Robot – My Family Ties

From Sphero the industry leaders in connected play, here is the ultimate Christmas gift for your fun loving child, a robot toy controlled via an app on your phone, tablet or i-pad.  This is the fun, fast toy great for  hours of fun and can be played indoors and outdoors.

Ollie – Technical Details;

  • iOS and Android compatible
  • Driving and programming apps
  • Durable polycarbonate body
  • Built-in LED glow
  • Bluetooth LE connection – 30 m range
  • Drives over 6 m/14 mph
  • USB charging cable
  • Automatic firmware updates
If you are planning on buying this as a Christmas gift my advice would be to charge up Ollie the night before as it needs about 3 hours to fully charge it and this will give you enough play for about 1 hour, that is it’s battery life. The Ollie has a very durable body and as it is designed for use inside and outside it needs to be.  You will be able to do flips and jumps with the Ollie very easily controlling it with the app you need to download.

The Ollie is app controlled, and my daughter’s were able to figure it out in two seconds flat, how to download the app, and how to navigate the app to control the Ollie. It goes to show that from 8 to 15 years old (my daughter’s ages) this is a toy that they will find easy to use from a technical point of view, even if you are unsure!

Ollie App

We downloaded the app from I-Tunes onto my phone (I say we, although it was more my girls as they were so excited to use it!) and once it was installed, it was straightforward to navigate through the app to control the Ollie.  The instructions on the app are clear and easy to follow, and give you everything you need to start off using Ollie and on to attaching the hub caps, charging Ollie (green for go!) and all the spin and flick tricks you need.

Once the girls were away and playing with Ollie, they continually played on it together until they had to charge it up again.  I can tell you if you have more than one child they will both want one as taking turns was just taking too long for mine!

Having tested the Ollie out really well over the last few weeks, and we all had a go in our family, it is a really fun toy for Christmas or for any other gift celebration for your child.  I would say that they may end up asking for different coloured ‘tyres’ as they come in different colours, and if you download onto your own phone – think twice as they will take over your phone and you won’t see it for hours! So my advice would be download onto their tablet/i-pad and let them play on their own device so your phone won’t run out with all the play.

Having the firmware updated automatically is a real benefit to this dynamic toy, the only drawback that we found is the actual battery life is about 1 hour, and if your children love it as much as mine did this can be frustrating, as you will then have to charge it up for 3 hours for a full charge.

The emphasis of the Ollie is for speed, tricks and to be fully customisable as you can get lots of accessories for the Ollie to make it your own, which my youngest daughter loved the idea of.

Below is a short video from GoShpero.com to show you what Ollie is like and how it performs both inside and outside, to give you an idea of what it is like before you buy it.
