November Degustabox – My Family Ties

I love to cook for my family and coming up with new and interesting snacks and meals is really important to me, as there is nothing worse than falling into the hum drum of the same meals over and over, week in week out.

One of the reasons I like the Degustabox subscription so much is that they bring you a taste of new and established brands with their new offerings to us the family consumers. It is always a pleasure to receive the email letting me know that my Degustabox is on it’s way and will be with me soon, the courier service will even let you know a time slot which you can re-arrange if necessary.

The boxes themselves are wrapped carefully, and the way they make the experience special is that it has the feeling of unwrapping a gift, just for you and the boxes always contain such a variety of products at amazing value for £12.99 a month, the value of the products is always much more than the monthly cost.  Don’t worry if there are bottles and glass items, Degustabox go to a lot of trouble to wrap all the breakable items in bubble wrap very carefully, so they arrive intact.

What is in November’s Degustabox?

Now on to the contents of this month’s box, there are 9 brands featured in the box (one bonus one) all very useable and we have managed to try them all as a family, this is really important to me as this is why I wanted to try out a food subscription box so I could develop new recipes not just for me and my OH but for our children as well.

Montanto Cider £2.59 – 660ml
Available from Tesco

Apples from Italy sourced from the Dolomite mountain orchards (some of the highest orchards in Europe) make this cider really something. It has a crisp, clean taste which is really fruity and refreshing, neither of us (my OH and I) drink much cider but I have to say that this brand has our attention as it is so drinkable. Medium dry and delicate in taste, it would go with lots of dishes, we had it with an Italian pasta dish and it was really delicious, so much so that we both are planning to buy some more.  I know I did say that I liked the versatility of the Degustabox so I could use all the products for the family, and of course only the adults drank this product! If I had it again I would make my Pork and Cider dish that is loved by my daughters so I could include them too.

Kettle Chips £2.19 – 150g
Available from Tesco

Salsa & Mesquite Flavour

It’s a very grown up crisp that we very frequently choose and the two flavours that Kettle have re-introduced this Christmas are a welcome addition to their range. We received the Salsa & Mesquite flavour which was a little spicy and very tasty, it has a barbecue flavour with tomatoes, chillies and peppers. Kettle Chips have also bought out a Stilton & Port flavour to go with the festive theme which sound equally tasty. These crisps are great if you are entertaining over the holidays as they go so well with dips and are always popular with everyone.

Cool Dawn Recovery Drink £1.04 – 140ml can
Available from Cool Dawn

Cool Dawn is a brand I haven’t heard from before so it was good to try something new, the drink is aimed for helping to ease the suffering of a hang over, so in the name of science I made sure I had a glass or two of wine the night before! Containing liquorice and citrus flavours with no stimulants, this non carbonated drink promises to help prevent or cure a hangover, you can choose to take it towards the end of the night while drinking or the next day.

The taste reminded me a bit of the dandelion and burdock drinks that I used to love when I was little, it’s a very different taste and for me, not unpleasant. It’s not a sweet drink and with the natural ingredients and the promise of a clearer head the day after drinking I can easily see why this would be a popular choice. We both quite liked the unusual taste and although we tested it out as a cure for a hangover it didn’t make much of an impact to cure a sore head, no more than lots of water would. It may have made more of a difference if we had drank two each perhaps, or less wine!

Lindt Lindor Melting Moments 65p
Available from Waitrose

A festive treat from Lindt for the holiday season in a snowflake shape and the distinctive taste of the delicious chocolate, these 5 treats went very quickly in our house and I have to say that the OH didn’t even get a look in! Perfect for stockings and for the Christmas table, or for popping into gifts to put under the tree these Melting Moments from Lindt are delicious.

Kent’s Kitchen Flavour Shots
Available from Kent’s Kitchen

I love the convenience of the flavour shots you can buy to enhance your gravy and Ken’t Kitchen have come up with five different flavour shots to add to your family meals to make cooking the evening meal quicker and tastier.  We tried the Fajita shots which we cooked with chicken, vegetables and rice, it added a great flavour with minimal fuss making this a winner for us as time is always an issue when it comes to mealtimes, and if there is an option to speed up mealtimes without compromising on taste then this is a perfect choice.

Pip Organic Apple Juice
Available from Tesco

I am not a big fan of fruit juices as they are usually so high in sugar, so I tend to steer clear of them all, even fruit squashes, and just stick to water fro my family. The Pip range though is not from concentrate, 100% organic and has no added sugars, water, or additives, and 150 ml gives you one of your 5 a day portions, I am much more likely to choose a product like this as a result. We all thought the Pip cloudy apple juice was fresh and tasty, particularly the girls loved it and asked if I could get some lunchbox sized bottles, a glowing endorsement and for them both to like so much too is great for me as so often they like such different things.

Branston Mediterranean Tomato Chutney £1.50
Available from Sainsbury’s

At this time of year it is so good to have a supply of tasty accompaniments to serve up to guests that come over to celebrate the festivities, and Branston pickle is always great with a cheese selection. Branston has a new range of flavours over this holiday season and we tried the Mediterranean Tomato Chutney flavour, and amazingly we all loved it! My OH and I really love the original flavour, but the children don’t, so it was great that we could all try this new flavour and all find it to be delicious.

On a cold rainy day I made a simple lunch of cheese on toast for us all to try out the chutney to accompany it, really tasty and not too strong the chutney paired well with the cheese on toast and I think it will go well with ham at Christmas too.

Holy Cow Curry’s x 2
Available from Tesco

The Holy Cow range are a tasty range of sauces that you can use by just adding meat or vegetables to. In our Degustabox we had two to try, The Mughlai Korma Curry Sauce and the Madras Chettinad Curry Sauce, both full of flavour and easy to prepare. As with the Kent’s Kitchen range what I like about these sauces is that from pan to table they are quick without being bland, both sauces offered tasty meals with the addition of being free from gluten, free from nuts and they pride themselves on having all natural ingredients too. They are so handy to have in the cupboard ready to make a tasty family meal.

Drink Me Chai – Spiced Chai
Available from Tesco’s

The bonus in the Degustabox this month was the Drink Me Chai, Spiced Chai sachet, in a sample size so not as generous as the other products which were full sized, however I did really like the taste of this and as it is something I wouldn’t usually buy it was really good to have a change and try a different tea.  I love a green tea and always have a lot of cups during the day, so this Spiced Chai was great to try and I would try it again.

So there you have it the Degustabox for another month, full of new products to try and at such a good price, I think Degustabox  is a great way to try out lots of new and tasty products which are about to be introduced to the market. It gives you an idea of what you like and what you don’t and also it introduces you to products you may have never looked at in the supermarket.
