It’s no mean feat not only getting the kids ready in the morning for the school run but also making sure you don’t look like a mum who’s just rolled out of bed! Having a no-fail beauty routine in the morning not only makes me feel more confident but also is such a tried and tested pattern for me now that it really takes no more than ten minutes – five at a push! When I look at my makeup bag I like to have multi tasking items that will not only look good and do their job well, but ultimately as a mum of two be quick to apply and long lasting – I don’t want too many touch-ups during the day if I can help it. The products below are essentials which I use over and over again as they work so darn well are a doddle to apply, the fact they are super speedy makes me love them even more. Here are my minimal faff make-up ideas for mums on the school run.
Speedy Makeup Ideas
This is a biggie for me but a lot of people who have a more even complexion will skip this step but getting your foundation right can make all the difference to give that polished look. I have reddened skin on my cheeks and nose (hereditary) so I literally never leave the house without some sort of base to conceal these trouble areas and I am always on the look out for new and improved products to conceal and not look to ‘cakey’. Fellow rosy-cheeked girls and guys out there rejoice as Re Cover have a gorgeous Correct & Conceal foundation which will hide any flaws just where you need them to give that smooth finish in a very natural way.
What I like about the formula is it’s easy to blend, a little goes a very long way and it looks so natural. The fact it covers my redness so well without having to apply layer after layer is a huge bonus for me and you can either wear alone on clean moisturised skin or with a light dusting of translucent powder to set.
Grooming those brows to perfection has never been so easy with so many products out there to help you and the latest ‘must-have’ I have found indispensable is the Goof Proof Brow Pencil from Benefit. Talk about quick and easy as all you need to add is a comb through with an eyebrow brush and you are good to go. This is such an easy product to use and it makes such a difference when you see the finished result. It’s one of those products you find and love and my top tip would be go to a Benefit counter and find the right colour for you as once you do it will go everywhere with you!
3. Prime & Shadow
Lots of people like to skip this step or opt for sweep of black eyeliner instead but I do like to change my look with a different eyeshadow shades and the Makeup Revolution Fortune Favours The Brave palette is so ideal for me. In collaboration with Jane from British Beauty Blogger Makeup Revolution have put together some fabulous palettes which are brilliant for a strong night look or a neutral day look. What I like about the Fortune Favours The Brave palette is it’s a great mix of day and night and also of shimmer and matte shades too. Would you believe it’s under a tenner too!? Outstanding value and if you are not sold on this particular collection check out their Flawless Matte – a gorgeous collection perfect for day wear. I like to prime before I use eyeshadow as I find it helps with any creasing and also for longer wear as well, my favourite at the moment is Urban Decay’s Primer Potion.
I prefer to wear mascara but if you want to save some extra minutes in the morning rush then why not get your eyelashes dyed (or do it yourself with a DIY home kit) so you can skip this step altogether but still have dark lashes. I am loving Benefit’s They’re Real mascara in jet black right now as it lengthen’s as well as gives great definition and you can use it on your lower lashes too. This step is an important one for me as it makes me feel ‘finished’ and it makes me look more awake – even with no coffee!
5. Blush Or Bronze
I don’t tend to do both it’s one or the other for me, so either I use Benefit’s Hoola Bronzing Powder or a blusher such as Bare Minerals Exuberance Blush. The Hoola Bronzing Powder I love as it is the perfect matte colour that instantly updates any look and is so easy to apply well. It also comes with it’s own dinky brush and inbuilt mirror too which is ideal for portability too. I have always shied away from blush as I have red cheeks, but having an even base (which is smudge proof) can look a little washed out and I like a little colour now I have found a good base. The Bare Minerals blush is so easy to apply to the apples of my cheeks and gives a pretty healthy but subtle colour and it always surprises me how much I like it after years of steering clear of blush!
It’s an either or for me on lips, never without. I go for a moisturising lip gloss such as the Clinique Sweet Pots (which I love!) or a long lasting lip gloss or lipstick such as Kat Von D’s Liquid Lipstick In Double Dare. Take a look at my review of the mini Kat Von D set here for more information. Both need a touch up later on in the day and both are really speedy to apply, I love them equally and am stocking up on more colours this month!
Now the makeup is all done it’s on the hair and I use the gorgeous Bardou Dry Shampoo Immaculate Spray (in-between washes) it has a fresh salon fragrance and Lee Stafford’s Wet Look Gelee (if I have my hair up) – it looks so pretty with an up-do and holds so well too. Lastly once your hair and makeup is done (in between coffee!) before I walk out of the door I have a spritz of perfume and grab my Brita Fill&Go water bottle from the fridge.
I have just fallen in love with the gorgeous scents of the Leighton Denny collection the four handbag sized Eau De Parfum are small enough to add to your handbag or makeup bag. They come in two unisex scents Desire and Lively and two feminine scents Original and Delightful. All are so wearable and refillable too and if I don’t spritz one of these four beauties I can use the solid perfume EDP from Leighton Denny that is always in my handbag – the Light & Dark scent is warm and unique and doubles to moisturise the skin on application as well.
The night before after getting lunches and uniforms ready, I always put a Brita Fill&Go into the fridge and it’s the last thing I grab en route to the front door. Walking the kids to and from school is the perfect opportunity to hydrate and it really encourages me to drink more water in these brilliant bottles. I aim for three to four bottles of water a day and so far, so good!
