I’m a little late with my Degustabox review from December as I have been hit with the awful winter flu that has been doing the rounds, so many apologies for the lateness of this post.
I know I have said it before but getting the monthly Degustabox is very exciting and I love the fact that it is a complete surprise every month with a box full of new tasty products. The December box didn’t disappoint with 9 brands offering their new products to sample, the only criticism I would have would be the lack of any festive foods in the box. However as we are starting the New Year with a view to choosing healthier options I was very happy to see lots of healthy choices in the Degustabox.
So what was in the December Degustabox?
The Chia Co
The first product was from The Chia Co, a new product that you can have for breakfast or as a snack, we received the mixed berry flavour in a 45g sachet of chia and oats and an 8g ‘shot’ of chia seeds. I have used chia seeds before with great results (see my Strawberry Jam Recipe) and what I liked about using them aside from the nutritional benefits is that the whole family really enjoyed them.
The sachets are a dairy free meal of a mixture of wholegrain oats, chia seeds combined with fruit and coconut oil.
Feel Better. More Energy. #eatchia
The Chia Co used the tagline above and I think this sums up what you can get out of eating chia seeds, they are packed with omega 3 ALA, fibre and protein while also rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. What I liked about The Chia Co’s new product is it’s convenience, having a busy family lifestyle ourselves we are always looking for quick, healthy meals for the whole family and these really fit the bill.
You get a sachet of whole grain oats and chia seed mix which you simply can add hot water to or put into the microwave to cook. Being dairy free, vegan, non GMO and sweetened with low-fructose coconut sugar these quick and very tasty breakfast ideas really tick a lot of boxes. If you have fussy eaters (I have two!) this breakfast or snack idea is a great option, while it is a really healthy meal it is also very tasty and my two girls really enjoyed it and would be happy to have again.(which is music to my ears!)
Coming in four flavours to give you a bit of variety they come in Blueberry & Lemon, Mixed Berry, Banana & Mango and Apple Spice and each serving is priced at £1.70.
The next offering was from Gloworm, we had all four flavours of this new premium mixer to add to your favourite spirits. The flavours of the Glowworm mixers come in Raspberry & Orris,(recommended for vodka) Cucumber & Apple, (recommended for gin) Pear, Spice & Lime, (recommended for rum) and Ginger & Lemongrass (recommended for bourbon)
Priced at £1.50 per can and all sugar and taurine free we enjoyed trying them out as they offer a very tasty addition to your favourite spirit. Handy to have in the cupboard for a time when you have guests or of course for yourselves I think the Gloworm range are tasty and useful to have in supply for when you need them, as we don’t often drink spirits, it was a welcome change to try these out with different spirits. So for us an occasional tipple with an accompaniment of a Gloworm mixer is a lovely way to unwind.
I went against the recommended mixer with gin, and tried out a cocktail of some sloe and damson gin with the Raspberry & Orris mixer. A shot of the sloe and damson gin with the Gloworm mixer over ice was fruity and very refreshing, the OH and I toasted the new year in with these easy cocktails.
I just love green tea so this new product from Pukka Herbs was very welcome, with 20 individually sealed green tea and lemon teabags that are organic and fairly traded this new product from Pukka Herbs is a very tasty and fresh tasting tea.
Priced at £2.39 for 20 tea bags, for me it is about the same price as the brand I use now so an easy swap and as I have tried so many green teas being my favourite hot drink, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The lemon is not too overpowering and if you infuse the tea for about 3-5 minutes it gives the best results of a refreshing tea. I would most certainly put this tea in my shopping trolley for it’s taste and also the freshness of the taste too.
From Bonne Maman comes a coarse shred marmalade ready to spread onto toast, or as we did the other day make a supply of marmalade sandwiches before we went to Cineworld to see the new Paddington film.
In our family, jam is a popular topping on toast of a morning, and we all liked the tangy taste of this marmalade with thick cuts of orange peel though-out the jam which I really liked, a tasty good quality marmalade which at £2.30 is a little more than I would usually pay for jam however after trying it out I would pay the extra for it’s taste and quality.
Frylight Infuse Chilli
I’m not a fan of chopping up chilli’s to add to cooking so this infused oil is a really ideal and convenient way to add a bit of a kick to your cooking.
With natural chilli extract in an easy to use spray bottle this oil is versatile, certainly for our family as you can regulate just how hot and spicy you want your dish to be by adding as much or as little as you like for your palette.
Priced at £2.00 for 120ml this chilli oil has an authentic chilli flavour and at 1 calorie per spray is great for your healthy new year meals to add a spicy chilli flavour.
From Kent’s Kitchen we had the Brazilian Moqueca Capixaba meal kit in this month’s box, a three step idea with natural ingredients to liven up your meals and most importantly for us to make them quick and easy without compromising on taste. We have tried some of the other products from Kent’s Kitchen with great success as we have all enjoyed them, and as I have said they are easy to use and what they concentrate on is the authentic taste and the natural flavourings.
The Brazilian meal kit comes with a pot of capixaba paste, a pot of lemon and coriander seasoning, and a pot of infused garlic oil. We cooked it with chicken and some fresh tomatoes and coriander, it was very easy to put together and tasty for us all. Having never had any Brazilian cuisine I can’t vouch for it’s authenticity, however what I can say is that it tasted very fresh, with garlic and lemon and it wasn’t too spicy for my girls either. A useful solution to the hum drum of mealtimes for any family and as there are 14 different flavours to choose from, it gives you plenty of options to make mealtimes a little more exciting.
If you are starting the new year off with a resolution to give up alcohol then perhaps you should try this offering from Eisberg. An alcohol free wine but with the same taste as your usual Chardonnay, Rose, Riesling or Cabernet Sauvignon. I have to say I have only tried an alcohol free wine twice, quit some time ago when I was pregnant and wasn’t very impressed, so I was keen to see if this bottle would change my opinion.
We had the Riesling which was a light and fruity wine which really did taste quite identically to a glass of alcoholic Riesling, and at only 34 calories per 125 ml is a great alternative if you are watching your waistline.
Priced at £3.49 per bottle this is a low calorie, alcohol free alternative either for health reasons or during pregnancy from Eisberg, and while I wouldn’t usually buy an alcohol free wine it was a really tasty change without the headache the next day!
My teenage daughter loves these crisps having tried them out at a youth club party over Christmas, and was over the moon to try their new flavour, we tried the barbeque Popchips, which are baked with no preservatives.
I am not a fan of buying my girls crisps, and we only ever buy them once in while as a treat so finding a lighter, healthier option is very welcome. Looking at the nutritional aspect of the Popchips there are only 100 calories per 85 g and they contain no trans fats at all, I would be much more inclined to choose these crisps knowing that they are the healthier option for my girls (less than half the fat of fried crisps) or for my OH and I.
Priced at £1.79 for a sharing bag they offer a good price and the barbeque flavour we tried was a hit with us all, I don’t usually like barebque flavours but this wasn’t too overpowering and strong.
With all the healthy offerings in this months Degustabox it was nice to see a bit of something chocolatey and a little naughty! That was in the form of Bahlsen’s new flavours of their popular biscuits, Caramel and Milk flavours. These biscuits are hard to resist and once they are in our house and opened they soon disappear as they are delicious, so it was great to try out the new flavours which were of course both really delicious.
Priced at £1.79 a packet the Bahlsen biscuits go very well with the Pukka Herbs green tea or a coffee, or as my girls tried with a glass of milk. Chocolate biscuit heaven, and if you allow yourself a weekly treat while on a New Year healthy eating program as we are, then this is a tasty option just don’t forget that if you eat the whole packet it’s almost 500 calories!
I think that this Degustabox offers very good value for money as the value is £25.75 and I like the fact that you get to try out these new products that you may have overlooked in the supermarket. With the good mix of healthy products in this months Degustabox it fit’s in perfectly with our family’s New Year healthy eating plan and even gave us a chocolate treat for our day off.
