100 Years Of Disney – My Family Ties

Disney On Ice

A celebration of 100 Years OF Disney

We were all looking forward to going to see Disney On Ice in Birmingham NIA, and as we haven’t been before we weren’t too sure what to expect from the performance.  It was a quick trip for us to the NIA in Birmingham, as it is only an hour away, and once we arrived we joined the queues of family’s to get into the Arena to see the performance.

When you are on your way into the main Arena you will find it hard not to notice the stalls selling all the Disney merchandise, of course my children wanted some, but just a tip to parents out there, if you can take a few snacks as they are quite pricey in the Arena.  A tub of popcorn was £9 so although the girls were a little disappointed not to have any they were really excited to see the show so this didn’t dent their mood too much.

I think the anticipation of the performance starting was almost too much for the girls to bear as they were so thrilled to be at the show. Once the show started Mickey and Minnie took us on a journey though the 100 years of Disney, with a wonderful fun, musical ice extravaganza.  Having never been before it was refreshing to see a live performance and the expressions on my girls faces during the show really said it all, they were awestruck, they were smiling all the way through and singing the songs from the classics too (I was too!)

It was quite breathtaking to see the talented skaters in their Disney themed costumes skate across the huge rink, and the choreography of the show was amazing. I am not ashamed to say that I think I enjoyed it as much as the girls did!

The performance was a story, narrated in part by Mickey and Minnie, with the addition of mini dialogues and songs from the Disney movies themselves, which was really fun for the girls as they know all the songs to those Disney films.  From Finding Nemo, Pinocchio, Mulan, Toy Story to The Lion King and plenty more Disney characters, the spectacular show that is Disney On Ice really had us all captivated, and at the intermission Lara my youngest was so disappointed as she thought that it was the end of the show!  She was relieved when we explained it was just a short break and then the show would be back on.

Be prepared for the wow factor, it really is an extravaganza and the performers put their all into the whole show.  The kids really loved the costumes which were realistic with amazing detail having gone into them. The fish and sharks of Finding Nemo and Belle and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast were really life-like and recognisable, and this makes the whole experience even more engaging for the children as they feel like they are actually in the movie.

There were children of all ages (including adults) all totally engrossed in the performance and I think that is quite rare to see in a lot of children’s shows.

Disney On Ice was an unknown show to us but we would most certainly return to see another performance and would recommend the show to families who love the Disney classics. Take snacks, take your camera, and don’t forget to look up from the rink as there will be plenty of action to dazzle you going on above the rink as well as on the rink.

For details of the dates and venues of the Disney On Ice tour have a look at my Disney post from a few weeks ago detailing the creation and idea for Disney On Ice as well.

If you need any further information just pop over to the Disney On Ice website where you will find all the information and news you need to get yourselves Disney ready for the performance.

Have you been to the Disney On Ice show this year? Or perhaps you have been in the past, what did you think of the performance? My guess is that your kids loved it as much as ours and you were humming along to the songs long after you left the venue just like I was.

We took the kids to see Disney on Ice many years ago in Sheffield and it was fabulous. Would love to go again, even though they are grown up now.

plenty memories made that day, it is always expensive to buy food and drinks when out with children I find it much better to buy a toy or such to remember the day.
